In November, 2010, there were 1280 Superfund sites with 62 sites listed to be added.

The average household generates no Hazardous waste at all . . .
"The USA EPA estimates that 256 million tons of officially classified hazardous wastes are produced in the USA each year. This does not include toxic and hazardous waste produced by industries not monitored by the EPA."
Always good advice. When referring to hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, putting any hazardous with the non-hazardous causes the entire container to be classified as hazardous under US EPA rules.

A Hazardous Substance - is any material listed as having Reportable Quantities Pursuant to Section 311 of the Clean Water Act (40CFR117.3) A Hazardous Material is any material or object that meets the any of the definitions of Hazard Classes in 49 CFR or that is listed in the Hazardous Materials Table at 49CFR172.101
In the United States, the disposal of hazardous waste is largely regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and its counterpart agencies in the various state governments. In other countries, other agencies are responsible for this function.
General household and industrial waste tends to be bulky. Landfill sites are rapidly filling up, with new sites becoming scarce. By recycling and reducing the amount sent to a landfill, it is better for the environment - which is better for us, too!
It isn't good for us and the world. (also all the other living things around us).
