The clutch mechanism that allows the bike to coast is broken. It requires special tools to replace, so unless you're an eager have a bike mechanic fix it for you. Tell him you need either a new freewheel or a new freehub body.

Can the axle of a bike be put in backwards?

ANSWER:For the front wheel on most bikes, it wont matter. On The one I had, the rear axle had a specific groove for where the sprocket went and the axle wasnt interchangeable. You knew right away if It was on backwards because the chain wouldn't go on the bike. For the newer bikes, I truly don't know.

Why would a bike when you stop pedaling continue rolling but start to slow down and eventually stop?

Well that happens because of 2 things:gravity and friction. When you stop pedaling it keeps going because the gravity is causing it to keep going or there is not much friction. It starts to slow down when the friction is enough.
