Overhead transmission lines use steel-cored stranded aluminium conductors. The steel supplies the necessary tensile strength, as aluminium is relatively weak. Copper is not generally used as it is significantly more expensive than aluminium.

there are basically two types of conductors. ohmic or linear conductors, non ohmic or non linear conductors. ohmic conductors follow ohms law which is V=IR. In an ohmic conductor current changes linearly with voltage or potential difference across its ends. since the voltage- current characteristic graph is linear they are called linear conductors. in non ohmic conductors current still changes with potential difference but not linearly. it may vary exponentially. since the V vs I characteristic graph is non linear they are called non linear conductors.
