The main cause of insulation breakdown is excessive temperature. However, it can also be caused by excessively-high electrical stress due to sharp corners or other protrusions in the conductor which act to intensify the electric field beyond the capability of the insulation.

The majority of times insulation breakdown is caused by heat generated by an over current draw on an under size wire. Bad high resistance splices will burn the insulation back along the wire from the splice. Other times by extremely high voltage spikes.

Why high voltage transformers have graded insulation?

It is to decrease the amt of insullation materials used. It can be used only for star connection.Answer'Graded insulation' is all about controlling the shape of the electric field within the insulator to prevent breakdown due to local peaks in potential difference across that insulation.

Different types of insulation used for transformers?

Most transformers are insulated with polymers or porcelain. Some transformers have an oil based insulation which must be kept dry to remain effective.

What is difference between breakdown voltage and dielectric strength of transformer?

The dielectric strenght of a transformer represents the maximum voltage permissible to apply across the transformer insulation i.e. between the transformer winding to another part of the transformer, normally the chassis or another winding and without break-down of the insulation ocurring (e.g. arcing). The breakdown voltage of a transformer represents a voltage that exceeds its dielectric strenght and that causes breakdown e.g. arcing across the insulation.

What are the major causes of loss of excitation on generators?

The major causes of loss of excitation on generators are due to an open circuit or a short circuit in the field winding. This may also be caused by a breakdown of the insulation system.

Which instrument is used to test insulation breakdown of a conductor?

Because contemporary testing is more complex and includes provisions for assessing a broader spectrum of characteristics (and doing it more accurately), we have specialized test equipment to handle it. In the case of insulation breakdown, it can be tested with an insulation breakdown test set. In the "old days" of testing, a megohm-meter or megger was used to "slam dunk" an evaluation.

Which oil is used in x ray machine for insulation and cooling?
