In the old days most men engaged in subsistence hunting and foraging. The development of tools allowed men to engage in agriculture, which offered a more consistent supply of food. As tools improved, fewer and fewer people had to do the basic chores of farming. What took most of a person's time came to take less and less, such that now almost all US agriculture is performed by less than 1% of the population, and they do not work at it all of their waking hours.

Tools and technology give man time to engage in leisure activities. Sometimes this may be playing with other tools. Some people rebuild old cars for fun. Others travel abroad, or answer questions on Wiki Answers.

To summarize, tools free men from onerous tasks, they do not make slaves of him.
