Dinosaur means "terrible lizard".

supplement. The very first piece of a dinosaur was found by the wife of an amateur fossil hunter in UK. She found a smooth piece of material in a dump of road repair material. Her husband (Mantell) considered it resembled a lizard tooth, but of a size previously unknown. Hence the 'terrible lizard' name. Mantell's son bought this part of the family treasures to New Zealand when he immigrated, and it is now in the collection of Te Papa Museum in Wellington.

It was named an Iguanadon. you may see this at tepapa.org.nz.
