Gastropoda in Latin and gastropod in English are scientific names for a garden slug.

Specifically, the word gastropoda comes from the ancient Greek words γαστήρ (gastér "stomach") and πούς (poús "foot"). The designation includes slugs since it includes molluscs which have internal, no or sparse shells. At the same time, it perpetuates the ancient misunderstanding of slugs as crawling on their bellies when their stomachs in fact are located on the top of their bodies.
