Storks wade in shallow water, feeding on fish, frogs, large insects and mollusks. They will sometimes keep their heads underwater and wait for fish to come by. Storks may stir up the mud with one of their very large feet in order to bring small mollusks or other prey close to the surface. They may not be beautiful birds in the usual sense, but watching a colony of them moving slowly through shallow waters as they feed is a marvelous sight. Unfortunately, wood stork numbers in the US have been declining in recent years, and in June 2014 they were declared endangered.
