Actually, food coloring is not good for them or necessary. Some people use it to attract the hummers, but it's better to use a red feeder. Once they find you, they don't care about colors.
The mixture is sugar & water. You don't have to boil the water, it just needs to be hot enough to dissolve the sugar. The ratio is 4 water to 1 white sugar (like mix 2/3 cup of hot water to 1/3 cup of sugar).
Early Spring
yes you can
No, it is not recommended to put Vicks Vapor Rub on hummingbird feeders. The scent can deter hummingbirds from feeding, and it may also be harmful to them if they come into contact with it. It's best to stick to using plain water and sugar in hummingbird feeders.
You can put them out in early April. The first sighting in Kentucky this year was March 25 in southwest Kentucky.
yes they are
Hummingbird nectar feeders, suet cake feeders, thistle sock feeders, tray feeders, and many others.
You can put them out now. Ruby-throated hummingbirds were reported in southern Ohio on March 31.
Yes, woodpeckers drink from hummingbird feeders. Red-bellied woodpeckers even pulled the plastic flowers off the feeding holes of my hummingbird feeder in order to get better access. I have also seen downy woodpeckers use hummingbird feeders.
In Bowling Green, Kentucky, it's best to put out hummingbird feeders in mid to late March. This timing aligns with the arrival of ruby-throated hummingbirds, which are common in the area. To ensure the feeders are ready when the birds arrive, it's a good idea to have them cleaned and filled with a sugar-water solution (one part sugar to four parts water) by this time. Keep the feeders up until late fall, around mid-November, to accommodate any late migrants.
It depends on where you live. Hummingbirds are flower feeders and consequently tend to migrate when flowers will be in bloom. So feeders should be put out in spring when flowers start blooming and should be kept out until the first frost. Its also important to change the liquid in feeders every week since it will begin to ferment.
That is normal behavior for a hummingbird. You can try making several different hummingbird feeders available so they don't have to share the same one.
They will feed when they return return from their migration. They will return in the spring as soon as the flowers bloom. Putting out a sugar water feeder should help attract them when they return.
