It is a trackable item that travels from cache to cache.

Each geocoin has an individual "code", by activating the code on Geocaching.com the geocoin becomes trackable and the original owner as well as other geocachers can now "track" the travels of the geocoin on it's journey around the world.

Some geocachers will place unactivated geocoins in a cache as a special gift. Whoever finds the coin can either keep it as a souvenir or activate it as their own.

Good geocachers will never keep an activated geocoin which belongs to someone else, they will move it from cache to cache.
