it was invented when mankind was born! Hugging is an innate biological response to very basic needs. It is actually something that is shared by many animals. Humans are built in ways that make hugging easier, but many other animals understand and appreciate the effect of touching one another in supportive or comforting ways. Hugging or it precursors probably go back several million years, and cannot be attributed to any one person.
