Indira Gandhi ordered the invasion of the Golden Temple in June 1984, known as Operation Blue Star, to remove armed Sikh militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale who had taken refuge there. The operation resulted in significant damage to the holy site and the deaths of many militants, soldiers, and civilians. The invasion sparked widespread outrage among the Sikh community and led to increased tensions in India. Following the operation, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in October 1984, which in turn triggered anti-Sikh riots across the country.
