Stalin's form of rule was unique enough that it became known as Stalinism. He ruled by imposing terror, and built the USSR up to be an industrial and military superpower. He did this by taking full control of the economy, and killing farmers who would not comply with him. This caused widespread famine which killed millions, and thereby gave him even more power to turn the country into a major force in the world.
