The American B-17 bombers were armored, and defended by machine gun turrets. The Japanese zeroes were agile fighter planes, but were made of light materials like aluminum, and no armor whatsoever. The Japanese pilots were amazed at how the B-17s could continue flying, despite their shooting thousands of rounds at them. They were literally like "flying fortresses".
