A batman is the personal assistant (attendant or servant) of an officer in Britsh military service. Or the person allocated to a company of military personnel to take charge of cooking utensils etc of the company.
The word is short for bat-horse man. The bat-horse was the horse used by the bat-horse man to carry non-combatant items by saddle pack.
Bat-horse is from
* French bât= packsaddle (from Latin bastum(noun), derivative of bastāre (verb) to carry, from Greek bastân, a re-formation of Greek bastázein to lift, carry,
* + horse,
* + man
= = .... becomes bat-horse man, which was shortened to bat man, then batman.
Compare French cheval de bât =pack-horse.
