NZ's First Female Prime Minister was Jenny Shipley, although she wasnt NZ's first elected Prime Minister. Jenny Shipley ousted the previous Prime Minister Jim Bolger in mid-1997. She was succeeded by the first elected Prime Minister, Helen Clark, in 1999.

She took over the office of Prime Minister after assuming leadership of the National Party from Jim Bolger. Since Dame Jenny Shipley there has only been one other female Prime Minister, Helen Clarke, who, as leader of the Labour Party, led the Government from 1999 to 2008.
For the majority of 1997, Jim Bolger of the National Party was Prime Minister of New Zealand. On 8 December 1997, he was replaced with Jenny Shipley of the National Party.
