The only female with in the British Order of Precedence ranked higher than the Duchess of Cornwall, at this time, is Her Majesty the Queen. If Her Majestys mother had still been alive, she would have ranked between the Duchess and Her Majesty.
In the case of Anne, the Princess Royal, being a daughter of the Queen, she is ranked below the wives of the younger sons of the Queen, thus placing her fourth, under Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and, until their divorce, would have been placed under Sarah, Duchess of York, wife of Prince Andrew.
A Grand Duchess in Russia, for example, was fully the equivalent of a Crown Princess. A famous example is Anastasia of Russia. In some countries, a Grand Duchess was as high as the royal nobility could go- like Luxembourg and she was in effect Head of State, but only ( highness) and not Majesty. Luxembourg is the only surviving Grand duchy in Europe where the head ruler is of Grand ducal rank. Monaco is a principality and hence has princes and princesses, not Grand Duchesses. The United Kingdom uses the nobiliary title of Duchess- (For example the Duchess of York) but not Grand Duchess. at no time was a major territory (in modern times) the domain of a Grand duke or Duchess, as was the case with Russia. The Austrians had the paralell rank of Archduchess which has a religious sound- some were joint princesses-abesses and wore a combination of royal-noble robes and religious regalia such as the Bishop"s Crozier. this title has become obsolete- but was for a time a Duchess-or Princess-Bishop or more accurately abbess, or a head sister of large convent . the convent of the Noble Ladies was in Prague- now under Czech rule. so there were different degrees and grades of Duchess- and Grand Duchess.-G.D. is usually analogous to a Crown Princess, or Czarevna to use the Russian term of Crown princesses of the blood-There were four: Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia!
Duchess, Marchioness, Countess, Viscountess, and Baroness, respectively.
They are equivalent ranks- western wise- Great Britain does not use the Grand Duchess rank, which was used by czarist Russia and also Imperial Austria. Some linguists have argued that Archduchess was a more accurate rendition for the Austrian Noblewomen. A Grand Duchess of Russia was both a Grand Duchess and a Crown Princess- or Czarevna. there were Grand Duchesses such as Elisabeth ( the sister of Czar Nicholas II) who were not Czarevnas- daughters of the Czar but were int he Horizontal or Fraternal linel. Generally the Grand Duchess ranks applied to the equivalent of Crown Princesses in the West. She should be addressed as Your Highness (Imperial Highness in formal occasions) and if under l8, as Anastasia was, (Your Grace). Dimitri got it right. Grace was NOT her middle name. Olga can be very loosely translated as something like Grace or Bounty, divine favor, however.

In England, members of the Royal Family hold the following ranks, in order of precedence (male/female): King/Queen; Prince/Princess (the heir to the Throne is the Crown Prince, who is also the Prince of Wales). Ranks of nobility are (in order of precedence): Duke/Duchess; Marquess/Marchioness; Earl/Countess; Viscount/ Viscountess; Baron/Baroness. Beneath them you have baronets and knights, but these are not of the nobility. They are commoners.
