At the beginning of the year it was Robert Peel, who was only in office for 4 months until his resignation on 8th April due to being unable to form a Government (however, he went on to become a succesful Prime Minister in the first half of the 1840's).

He was succeeded by William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, on 18th April. Lamb was in power until 1841 and oversaw the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, an agreement with various New Zealand maori chiefs which paved the way to New Zealand becoming part of the British Empire.

From 1869 up until 17th February 1874 it was William Gladstone, who had been elected in December '68. He was a Liberal who was in favour of Irish Home Rule and who outlawed corporal punishment in peacetime. He also introduced the Trade Union Act, which officially recognised trade unions as a legitimate entity.

However, his diplomatic failure in preventing the Franco-Prussian War led to him being replaced by the Conservative Benjamin Disraeli in February 1874.

Disraeli was the first person of ethnically Jewish origin to become Prime Minister- he introduced a number of important social reforms, including better housing for the working classes and the outlawing of the use of boys as chimney sweeps, as well as reintroducing Queen Victoria to public life after her long absence following the death of Prince Albert and bestowing upon her the title 'Empress of India'. Disraeli also secured joint ownership of the Suez Canal with France, and oversaw the break-up of 'the League of the Three Emperors', but also took Britain into the second Anglo-Afghan War and the Zulu War. He remained Prime Minister up until April 1880.

Gladstone died in 1898 at the age of 89; Disraeli died in 1881 at the age of 77, only a year after leaving office.
