Because they had an argument about who should be pope. Henry said it should be him but the pope said it should be him!

Anglican Catholic Answer!

The pope withdrew communion from Henry, Henry didn't break with the Bishop!

The King sought to change wives! The Bishop of Rome denied him an annulment not for any high flown moral reason, but because one of the ladies nephews objected, very rightly, to her being treated that way! The King was angry and pointed out that the Pope wasn't the only person who could dispense annulments that way and besides, he had no authority to be dealing in another bishop's see this way. It was against the teachings of the highest authority in the Catholic Church, the seven ecumenical councils. It was the Pope's turn to be angry and he cut out Henry from his communion list!
