The power structure in the Indus Valley Civilization remains largely ambiguous due to the lack of deciphered written records and limited archaeological evidence. The civilization, which thrived around 2500 BCE, left behind advanced urban planning and infrastructure, but its political organization, leadership, and social hierarchy are still not well understood. Scholars continue to debate the nature of governance, whether it was centralized or decentralized, and the role of religious or economic factors. Consequently, much of our understanding is based on inference rather than concrete evidence.

Rulers in ancient China, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and Egypt employed various methods to expand their states, including military conquest, strategic alliances, and diplomacy. In China, dynastic leaders often used military campaigns to annex neighboring territories. Mesopotamian rulers, such as those in Babylon, expanded their influence through warfare and the establishment of trade networks. In the Indus Valley and Egypt, rulers often enhanced their power through centralized administration, agriculture development, and infrastructure projects, which helped integrate surrounding regions.
Three ways the early river valley civilizations were alike are: they all developed near rivers, such as the Nile, Tigris and Euphrates, and Indus; they all relied on agriculture as the foundation of their economies; and they all developed complex social structures with rulers and priests holding significant power.
