Obamacare is the term used to describe the Affordable Care Act that was signed into law by President Obama in March of 2010. The Affordable Care Act, also known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or PPACA, expands the government's role in the provision of healthcare by expanding coverage through new entities (State Exchanges) and existing government programs (Medicaid, Community Health Centers), restructuring how coverage is provided (Medicare) and delivered (Accountable Care Organizations, Medical Homes), all with the intent of creating a healthcare system that dramatically reduces the size of the uninsured population in the United States.
