The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
The original intention of NATO was to create a mutual defense pact against the Soviet Union. NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The Philippines is not a member of NATO because it is not a European country, and NATO is primarily a transatlantic military alliance established for mutual defense among its member states in North America and Europe. Additionally, the Philippines has its own defense agreements, such as the Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States, which align more closely with its regional security needs. The geopolitical focus of NATO does not extend to Southeast Asia, where the Philippines is located.
Both were intergovernmental military alliances created before or during the Cold War, on the principle of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party.

The United States and Canada are part of a number of defensive-related alliances. Besides both being part of NATO, they share air defenses with NORAD, and the Permanent Joint Board of Defense.
Several international organizations were formed as defensive alliances, notably NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) established in 1949 to provide collective defense against aggression, particularly from the Soviet Union. The Warsaw Pact, created in 1955, served as a counterbalance to NATO among Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War. Additionally, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), formed in 1992, aims to ensure mutual defense among its member states in the post-Soviet space.
