The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was initially formed in 1949 as a defensive military alliance between 12 countries in response to the threat of Soviet expansion during the Cold War. The member countries of NATO agreed to mutual defense and to come to the aid of any member under attack. The idea was that a unified front of countries would be stronger in the face of a potential Soviet invasion.
