Caterpillars eat as much laves as they can. Different caterpillars eat different things. When a caterpillar eats a lot, it sheds a layer of skin that it grows out of. That is why caterpillars may seem like they are changing colors and/or patterns.
Because animals such as caterpillars and snakes do not shed dead skin cells individually, an entire layer peals off at once instead. Whereas us humans shed millions of dead skin cells every day without us realizing it. :)
