Rats are more likely-they love them & snails too. If you find a bunch with holes chewed through them, but otherwise intact; look out. If you cut back the water, you won't have to worry about it.

I think that the answer is yes. I bought some Mouse poison, pot it under a cover and eventually after a week or so never saw the mice again. Tthis has been going on for weeks now and I keep finding lots of slugs in the bait, so I can only assume that the slugs are eating the bait
