Many are venomous, but most are not harmful to humans-with few exceptions. There has never been a tarantula related death in the us. The mechanical damage from the bite can be far worse. On some; their fangs are bigger than a snakes. The good thing is they are surprisingly fragile & many times cannot even penetrate clothing. The little things alongside their fangs are petapalps-in a scorpion they developed claws. They help manipulate their food amongst other uses like mating.
Tarantula venom is rarely powerful enough to kill a human. However - there have been cases reported. This is probably due to the 'victim' being particularly sensitive to the venom - or already weakened by some other means. A bite from a tarantula is usually rated as the equivalent to a bee-sting.
