A bee has five eyes: two compound eyes on the sides of the head and three tiny simple eyes, called ocelli, on top of the head.

The ocelli do not form images but respond to changes of brightness more quickly than the compound eyes. It is thought they are used by the bee to orient itself as it pitches and rolls in flight.
