Sometimes earthworms are harmful to the environment; other times they are beneficial.

Studies have shown that at least 7 species are invading hardwood forests throughout the US and causing damage to tree wildflowers, ferns, and tree seedlings.

Soils that are compacted can benefit from earthworms by making tunnels that "aerate" the soil. They incorporate organic matter into the soil and give them nutrients, but they can be very harmful. Their casting (excrement) can cause erosion and lumpy lawns.

The damage from earthworms has become a problem in areas and can be reduced greatly if fishers are educated not to let unused worms into the environment.
