They walk - after a fashion. They start with all "feet" on the ground, then the body arches slightly to lift a few pairs of feet off the ground and forwards a little way before lowering them. This arching motion continues along the animal's length from one end to the other; then starts again at the other (initial) end. Caterpillars can also rear up to help them climb over obstacles or sense whatever is just ahead.
