Earthworms eat dead leaves and other dead plant material. In turn, the excrete their waste, which is rich in nutrients that allow plants to thrive. Also, by burrowing in the soil, they loosen the soil, which is also good for plant growth. Besides that, they are an important food source for other animals, such as birds. Moles almost exclusively live on earthworms.
