We keep ours in a jar with half pond water half tap water. You will need land or something for them to float on or else they will drown. We feed ours rotten wood, algae, and cat food. Don't clean their jars ever.

Cloudy water in a fish tank can be caused by overfeeding, inadequate filtration, or a buildup of waste and debris. Regular water changes and proper maintenance can help keep your tank clear.
i wouldn't keep water in a water tank unless it has a purification system installed on it i would think it would have to be installed by a professional water tank installers ,so if i did i knew it would be safe to keep for long periods of time
What year? The older air-cooled Beetles has at least three tank sizes, and the newer once may have had different sizes as well. Older air cooled models commonly used a 10.5 gallon tank, with larger ones available from the after market. Newer water cooled Golfs and New Beetles tend to have a 14 gallon fuel tank.
Infiltration
Some beetles can and do live in salt water, such as the salt creek tiger
So the steam can rise from the boiler to the hot water tank storage
