I live on the coast and there are always plenty of sand gnats!
(not sure if sand fleas are the same thing).......
Before you go outside wipe all exposed areas with a dryer fabric softener sheet.
I have found Bounce works the better than off brand names.
This good for mosquitoes and flies too.
After I finish wiping exposed areas, I then take a few more and tie on my belt loop or on my chair handle or the chain that holds your porch swing.
I have been doing this for years and it works great for me.
At least I don't smell like a bottle of insecticide!
