My grasshopper, Buddy, is almost always hungry. However, to tell if a wild grasshopper is hungry or not, find a small leafy plant, preferably with the stem intact, and place the leaf close to it's mouth. If it starts chewing on the leaf it MIGHT be hungry. Let it go an if it continues munching on the leaf, it's hungry. To see is a tame grasshopper is hungry, I place lettuce by its mouth and again, if it starts chewing, let go of it till it walks or jumps away.

Other than that, there is no easy way to tell.
