For standard, manual 4 on floor old Beetle:
Put shift lever into neutral
with right foot pressing all the way down on brake
and left foot pressing all the way down on clutch pedal
push and hold down on shif lever (toward ground)
and move lever to left
then back (toward rear of car)
release downward pressure on lever
Turn head and look backward
Ease foot off clutch pedal
while gently pushing gas pedal
