How do you rid house of gnats?

Development from egg to adult can take just a week. And fruit flies lay hundreds of eggs. So the moisture and the organic matter, for egg laying and larval feeding, must go. [1] So check for, and seal, all entry points through cracks and holes in screens. [2] Clean all drains and especially garbage disposals every 1-3 months. [3] Clean all spills, especially of fermented and sweet drinks such as liquor, soda, syrup, and vinegar. [4] Cover all food that isn't refrigerated. [5] Dry and cover all empty, rinsed out bottles, cans and containers. [6] Keep all cleaning supplies, such as mops and rags, as dry as possible. [7] Keep whatever doesn't have to be at room temperature, covered and in the 'fridge. [8] Make sure of the proper fit of all doors and windows. [9] Monitor fruit and vegetables for ripening/rotting. [10] Pick up all crumbs and food remains. [11] Put all garbage in tightly sealed bags and tight-lidded containers. [12] Set up sticky paper traps. [13] Swat. [14] Use proper, environmentally and user-friendly indoor aerosols such as pyrethrum-based products.

If they are breeding indoors find the stagnant water and eliminate. Look at plants to see if any are breeding-if they are remove, dirty drains, water in walls, a leak, pan under frig, etc. If they are from the outside you have to treat the yard.

get a bowl of water and put dish soap and vinegar in it that should help and get rid of any old fruit that sits out !!

You must first determine if from inside or outside. If you see large numbers in a bathroom for example, there is a moisture source somewhere & they are breeding. if you locate & dry out the area, they will disappear. Same holds true for ext-moisture reduction is the key to elimination.

There are a few simple easy solutions to getting rid of gnats. To control the adults put out a small bowl containing a few tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar with a couple of drops of dish washing liquid (like Dawn). Put this solution out where you notice the gnats, they will be attracted to the Apple Cider Vinegar and they end up drowning in the solution.

If the insects are coming out of houseplants (most of them do), put about a 1/4 inch layer of sand on top of the soil of your plants. This basically prevents the larvae from coming to the surface and they die in the soil.

Here is a 3-part solution:

1. Clean the place and remove whatever is attracting them. Take out the garbage, locate and remove any rotting fruit or other food, and wash dishes.

2. Put out some fly tape. Put it in all the places where the gnats/flies prefer. That would be near windows, garbage cans, light fixtures, and sinks.

3. You can also use flying insect spray for a more immediate solution.

Optionally, you can also seal off any places where they are getting in the house and change your door use habits.
