A beehive is the structure in which a colony of bees live. You can get a hive that is already constructed, or one in a kit, or you can build one from scratch. Plans are available online and from some suppliers of beekeeping products.

The hive is essentially a box made of wood, and lots of places sell them. Note that dimensional lumber (usually fir, like pine) is used for their construction, and not plywood. And you'll need to paint the outside white.

It is a good idea to buy one, or to build one just likethe ones that are sold commercially. That means in the same dimensions. That way you can buy the frames with "preformed" wax for the bees to build on. It's fairly quick and easy to set things up, and a local beekeeper can help. Other local types may help you by supplying a colony of bees.

There are a lot of individuals and groups that will assist a would-be beekeeper. That eclectic crew called Backwards Beekeepers in Southern California has some interesting takes on things. A county agricultural adviser may have information, and all you need to do is ask around. Links are provided for more information. And if you're interested in having a colony of bees of your own, be sure to check the Related question that speaks to that.
