Terrariums provide a good micro-climate for whatever is inside.

Terrariums are used to grow small plants, and are also used for small land animals.

The temperature inside is often warmer than that of the room they are in.

There are several factors that contribute to increased temperature:

* They are sealed, or semi-sealed, so heat loss is minimised * The glass, if in the sun, converts some of the sun's light rays into heat, which becomes trapped inside. * They can be heated 'artificially' by using a small heat source, such as an electric light bulb.

* Sometimes the heating is controlled by installing a temperature regulator. Moisture is also retained. When the damp soil dries, the moisture evaporates and goes into the air, but the air can't get out, so the damp air stays in the terrarium, keeping it at a constant humidity level. This is very good for certain types of plants which thrive best in those conditions.

Whether the terrarium is used for plants or small animals, the fact they are made of glass means that you can enjoy looking at what's inside! -------------------------------------- * For pictures and more information, see 'Related links' below this box.
