The consequence of poor water holding capacity is the effect that sand has on cactuses. Sand has good drainage. So water doesn't stay in it long. Cactus roots have to act quickly, and over as wide an area as possible, to draw necessary amounts of underground moisture into the roots. Another consequence therefore is root growth, to keep adequate moisture levels within the cactus. Still another consequence is stem growth, to move in water and dissolved nutrients. The water and dissolved nutrients are used in the photosynthetic interaction with the sun to build energy sources and store food.
