How is a beehive made?

A hive is an artificial home for bees supplied by a beekeeper for his bees to live in. Most are built in factories and can either be supplied 'in the flat' for home assembly or bought already assembled. Some beekeepers with carpentry skills build their own but exact measurements are critical. If you mean 'how do bees build their nest in the wild?' - they produce wax from glands specifically for that purpose and use it to make comb, which is a framework of hexagonal 'cells'. The queen lays her eggs in these cells and the workers store pollen and honey in them. They very often build this nest in a hollow inside a tree trunk. This gives them shelter from the weather and some protection from predators. This is also what happens inside the artificial home that a beekeeper has provided for his bees.

You need to keep the queens separate from each other, there are many ways to achieve this. One is to use a queen excluder on top of one hive, empty super(s) above that, and another hive on top of that (with or without another queen excluder). Another method is two small nuc sized hives side by side with a queen excluder above both with honey supers on top of that. It is generally accepted that you cannot have the two hives separated by just a queen excluder.
