most bugs don't have lungs so they don't breath like you and I. oxygen passively enters and exits their bodies through microscopic holes. if you impede oxygen from entering their bodies, they will only live for a short period. some bugs (ants for example) may be able to hold on to an air bubble which will let them live a bit longer if they've been submerged.
