It depends on the species. The Giant Pacific Octopus can indeed live for five years but others live only about six months.

Octopuses only reproduce once. Males die no more than a few months after mating. The female dies once the eggs she's been guarding hatch. Although they stop eating after mating it is an endocrine secretion from the optic gland that kills them.
