Yes, yellow jackets can see in the dark to some extent, but they are not as effective at seeing in low light conditions compared to during the day.
Yes, I have noticed that bumble bees and yellow jackets DO compete for territory. I have had many yellow jackets infesting my home in upstate New York each season for 17 years. However, this last summer, I had a bumble bee family that moved into my front porch. I watched them each day as they literally chased away the yellow jackets whenever they came near. Yet the bumble bees never caused any harm to me or my family. Thank goodness for my "watch dogs", the bumble bees -- they are my guardians against those angry yellow jackets!
no they don't. there are rare cases they will die, but not often.
Yes, yellow jackets are beneficial to gardens. The insects in question (Dolichovespula spp, Vespula spp) fulfill roles of predator and or prey within feeding chains and food webs. They also serve as pollinators of day-blooming edibles, ornamentals and wildflowering plants.
There is no particular tradition about wearing jackets and caps on St. Patrick's Day in Ireland. Some do and many don't. Those that do would often wear jackets and caps on other days too.
Titanic had about 3,560 lifejackets. About thirteen lifejackets survive to this day.
That they are escaping predators, seeking food or turning in for the night is what it means when yellow jackets fly close to the ground.Specifically, yellow jackets (Dolichovespula, Vespula spp) can be included among ground-nesting insects. They may be spotted heading toward or hovering over the ground when they are intent upon a surface-dwelling food source. They also may be attempting to reach the safety of home, either because their day's work is complete or because a predator is in hot pursuit.

The Frankford Yellow Jackets was the first Philadelphia NFL team, originally formed in 1922 from a combination of players from the Frankford Athletic Association and a Philadelphia City League team, the Philadelphia Union Quakers. The Yellow Jackets won the Philadelphia City title in 1922, then played non-conference games against established NFL teams in 1922-23, finishing the season with a record of 6-2-1. The team's success lead to the Frankford Athletic Association being offered an NFL franchise. They played under the name Yellow Jackets from 1924-1931, winning the NFL Championship in the 1926 season (awarded by record; there was no championship game until 1933).Financial hardship during the Great Depression, a fire that destroyed their home stadium, and several other setbacks led to the team's demise. They concluded their NFL operation on October 26, 1931, the day after the Yellow Jackets defeated the Chicago Bears at Wrigley Field, 13-12.The remains of the Yellow Jackets team was awarded to Burt Bell and Lud Wray in July 1933. Bell and Wray renamed the franchise the Philadelphia Eagles, after Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal symbol.
