A consumer of plants..
All animals are consumers. Only plants can be producers. Only fungi and bacteria can be true decomposes. A caterpillar is an animal.

A caterpillar is neither a primary producer nor a secondary producer; it is a primary consumer. Primary producers, such as plants and algae, create their own energy through photosynthesis, while primary consumers, like caterpillars, feed on primary producers. Caterpillars consume leaves and other plant material to obtain energy.
Shouldn't a producer and a herbivore suffice? Like a plant and a caterpillar?

They are the one who eat first the producer, for example plants eaten by caterpillar and worm eaten by chicken. So on my example's given it shows that the caterpillar is the first consumer because it is the one who eats the producer.
