Some can simply by eating too many leaves or tent caterpillars, which where I live are pretty destructive create their tent like nests in trees until the point where you can no longer save the tree. To stop this from happening, trim off all effected areas as soon as you spot them. The more you procrastinate, the more destructive the nest becomes. Tie up the branches in a thick plastic bag and mKe sure there are no holes. With any luck, you will not get them again in the same year. Where I live, every yard gets them once a year, around the fall.
