M Butterfly, loosely based on Pucciniâ??s â??Madame Butterfly uses a theme of reversed stereotypes. The title character uses the image of the female Asian stereotype of being exotic, submissive with a desire to be dominated, but assumes the role of the dominant western male to control a French businessman who, though seeking the stereotypical Asian female/Western male dynamic, actually finds the roles reversed and ends up being forced to play the role of the submissive female instead.
