Holes in shag carpet can be caused by various factors, including wear and tear from foot traffic, damage from pets, or snagging by furniture or sharp objects. Additionally, poor-quality materials or manufacturing defects may contribute to the degradation of the carpet. In some cases, insects like carpet beetles may also cause holes as they feed on natural fibers. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help mitigate further damage.
It is generally not a recommended procedure. The abrasion of carpet on carpet will cause both layers to wear prematurely. Certain types of glue down carpet can be installed over existing glue down carpet. Check the manufactures installation instructions. I do agree that installing stretch in carpet over existing stretch in carpet is not a good idea.
When installing carpet over a subfloor, it is important to first ensure that the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Use a carpet pad for cushioning and to protect the carpet. Stretch the carpet tightly and secure it along the edges. Trim excess carpet and tuck it neatly along walls. Vacuum the carpet after installation for a clean finish.
To prevent damage or wear on carpet from a rolling chair, consider using a chair mat specifically designed for carpeted floors. This will provide a smooth surface for the chair to roll on, reducing friction and preventing damage to the carpet fibers. Additionally, regularly clean the wheels of the chair to remove any dirt or debris that could cause abrasion on the carpet.

To attach carpet to a tack strip, you need to stretch the carpet over the strip and use a knee kicker or power stretcher to push the carpet into the teeth of the strip. This secures the carpet in place.
Holes in rocks can get bigger through weathering processes such as freeze-thaw cycles, water erosion, chemical weathering, and biological activity. These processes can gradually wear away the rock material around the hole, causing it to expand over time.
To install carpet screws securely and effectively, follow these best practices: Use a power drill with a screwdriver bit to drive the screws into the subfloor. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting the wood. Place screws at regular intervals along the edges of the carpet to ensure a secure hold. Use screws that are long enough to penetrate the subfloor but not too long to damage the carpet. Tighten the screws firmly, but be careful not to over-tighten and cause damage to the subfloor or carpet.

There are 2 holes. One is over Arctic. One over Antarctic.
In order to lay carpet, tack strips are nailed all the way around the area to be carpeted. When you pull off that tack strip you will have a nice mess of holes that won't look good and will be hard to fix. Better to get large area rugs.
