Pupas do not eat. The pupa is a caterpillar, in a state of dormancy, completely encased in a cocoon. During this stage they do not eat, drink, or move at all. They grow wings, legs, and other parts to become an adult butterfly.

Because they can't eat in their pupa stage, caterpillars eat massive amounts of food to have plenty of stored energy before they become encased in their cocoon.
