Some facts about mollusks include the fact that mollusks are invertebrates and include squid and snails along with the octopus. Mollusks often have shells and also include muscles and clams and scallops.
Mollusks (also "molluscs")belong to the phylum Mollusca, and this name means "soft-bodied". They form one of e largest groups within the kingdom Animalia, as there are about 200,000 different species, world-wide. The phylum Mollusca includes:

  • Bivalves - oysters, clams, mussels and scallops
  • Gastropods - slugs and snails
  • Cephalopods - octopuses, cuttlefish, squid and nautiluses
  • Chitons
  • Sea slugs
  • aplacophorans or spicule worms
Molluscs are characterised by having an unsegmented, soft body and a muscular foot or tentacles. They also have a mantle that can secrete an internal or external shell. They all have a tongue which has teeth, and this is called a radula.

One of the smallest of the molluscs is the Little Blue Periwinkle, which is about the size of an adult's fingernail. The largest molluscs are squid.
