Proglottids are segments of a tapeworm's body that contain reproductive structures. As the tapeworm matures, new proglottids are formed from the neck region and older segments are pushed toward the end of the body. Each proglottid can contain both male and female reproductive organs, allowing for self-fertilization or cross-fertilization with other tapeworms. These segments eventually detach and can be expelled from the host, often containing fertilized eggs.
