Caterpillars others than the monarch... there are only four types of butterflies that lay their eggs on milkweed: the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus); the Queen (Danaus gilippus); the Tropical Milkweed Butterfly (Lycorea cleobaea); and the Soldier Butterfly (or "Tropic Queen"; Danaus eresimus).

Another caterpillar that I was desperately trying to find the name of (which brought me to this page) is Euchaetes egle, the milkweed tussock caterpillar or milkweed tiger moth.

What food does a monarch caterpillar eat?

Monarch caterpillars eat milkweed. Swan Plants are a variety if milkweed. Dogbane and giant milkweed are two other varieties. The family name is Asclepias. It is true that monarch caterpillars will eat pumpkin although they need some milkweed. Only the larger caterpillars can eat pumpkin though. The caterpillars will not eat any other leaf no matter how hungry. They will rather starve to death than eat a different leaf. The reason I know all this is that I have raised over 15 caterpillars and I have watched every stage of their life from hatching to making a chrysalis to be coming a butterfly. _____________________________________________________________ Monarch Caterplillars mainly eat Swan Plants but large ones can survive on pieces of pumpkin. The above answer is totally FALSE! Monarch caterpillars (cats) eat the Mlkweed plant. The mother lays her eggs directly on the Milkweed, on the underside of the leaf. The cats then eat the leaves. If they eat the leaves of any other plant they will sicken & die. I can tell you from years of gardening & lots of research that went onto my butterfly garden, that cats do not eat pumkin or the leaves of any other plant other than Milkweed. I would never think of feeding them pumpkin & I have never heard of a Swan Plant. The Latin name for Milkweed is Asclepias, & there are many different kinds of Asclepias. I have pics of Mpmanrch caterpillars on my facebook page, Flowers in Bloom, follow the link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Flowers-in-Bloom/187266108057173?ref=hl Monarch caterpillars DO NOT EAT PUMPKIN!! Monarch cats eat Milkweed. If you feed them pumkin, or anything else other than Milkweed, they will sicken & die!! There is NO truth to what the above poster wrote, "that larger cats eat pumkin but need some Milkweed." That is an untrue, false & ignorant statement to make. Monarch cats eat Milkweed & only Milkweed. The mother lays the eggs on the Milkweed, & they eat the Milkweed leaves. Not Pumkin or anything else! Stop coming on here making riduculous ignorant comments that have no basis in fact!!

Do monarch butterfly larva eat parsley?

We have parsley in our garden that is covered in Monarch eggs and there are 7 caterpillers eating the parsley leaves, not the stems. We were so surprised, they are about a week old now and 1inch long. We live in Northern Alambaba ****************** Unless your caterpillars are eating milkweed, you have found something other than a Monarch caterpillar. Female Monarchs lay their eggs exclusively on the milkweed plant and the caterpillars eat nothing but the leaves of the milkweed plant. This is one of the reasons why Monarchs are becoming more and more endangered. The milkweed is classed as a noxious plant in many jurisdictions and sprayed. I remember as a child finding "monarch" caterpillars on the carrot leaves in the garden and being disappointed when they turned into something other than a Monarch. The butterfly we discovered was just as beautiful - the Black Swallowtail. The caterpillars you find on parsley leaves are likely those of the Black Swallowtail which feed on the leaves of the carrot family, including celery, dill and parsley. The caterpillars bear a certain resemblance to the caterpillar of the Monarch. Search "Black Swallowtail" in Wikipedia to see a picture of one, or try this link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Swallowtail Compare that caterpillar with this image of a Monarch caterpillar at this Wikipedia site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Monarch_Butterfly_Danaus_plexippus_Vertical_Caterpillar_2000px.jpg

Where are milkweed tussock moth caterpillars locatedAnd what do they eat.?

they can probably be located in all of America if you attract them you can attract them with milkweed I do not know what their favorite milkweed is but just try tropical milkweed that is monarch caterpillars favorite food. And do not use pesticide on any animals do not use that gypsy moth spray i mean do you think they know what their doing. And think about this their perfect they never sinned so do not use pesticide do not kill any animals I respect all animals even if their was a cockroach in the house I would not care. And if you want to attract painted lady caterpillars than use Canada thistle.Put the Canada thistle in a pot because the thistle will probably kill all the grass.and if you want to attract black swallow tail caterpillars plant parsley. do not kill any of the caterpillars and do not eat anything they are eating. And i would also like to tell you not to rip out flowers for yourself i mean do you know how wasteful that is.don't you want the flowers to live i mean its not like the only way to see them is to rip them out.let the bees go on them.and your killing the flower to i mean that is like killing a human because flower have male and female organisms i think.so do not rip out flowers that is horrible.
